Boat Winterization Guide

Protect your vessel during the off-season and ensure a perfect start next spring.

Essential Boat Winterization Guide: Protect Your Investment

Boat winterization: covering and protecting the vessel

Winterizing is not just about parking your boat; it’s about ensuring it survives the humidity and cold of the Mediterranean winter. At Rumbomed, we believe proper storage is the secret to a long-lasting vessel.

In the Costa del Sol, although the climate is mild, humidity and inactivity can be the worst enemies of your boat's electrical systems and upholstery. A structured winterization plan saves you thousands in repairs.

A boat that is ignored during winter will demand your full attention (and wallet) in the spring.

Engine and Fuel System

Protecting the marine engine for winter
Stabilizing fuel and flushing the cooling system is vital.

The engine needs special attention before a long period of inactivity. We recommend changing the oil to remove acids and adding a fuel stabilizer to prevent the "varnish" effect in the tank.

Fuel Treatment

Keep the tank 95% full with stabilizer to minimize condensation.

Battery Maintenance

Disconnect and charge them periodically or use a solar trickle charger.

Interior Care: Fighting Humidity

Mildew can ruin an interior in weeks. Remove all cushions, life jackets, and fabrics, or at least place them in a vertical position to allow air circulation.

Ventilation

  • Use moisture absorbers (calcium chloride)
  • Keep interior doors and lockers open
  • Clean the bilge and keep it dry

Plumbing

  • Drain fresh water tanks
  • Empty the water heater
  • Clean and dry the holding tanks
